Developing an Agile Mindset
Today’s world is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA). And to navigate through this landscape requires a new leadership mindset.
OE Cam believes leaders will need an agile mindset and our research suggests there are four, critical dimensions:
- The first dimension is Being Ambidextrous – this is about being able to deliver ‘Business as Usual’ but at the same time, disrupt the status quo. It requires an ability to ‘switch’ between different, often competing ideas, so that leaders can make swift decisions for today whilst keeping an eye on tomorrow.
- The second dimension is Constructive Authenticity. If a leader is comfortable to be who they are at work, then they have the mental and creative freedom to perform at their best. Humility, Empathy & Emotional Intelligence are all important here. Leaders who are self-aware to recognise they can’t have all the answers will more readily seek out and value the opinions of others – so the whole team is performing with ease.
- Thirdly, we have External Perspective. In a busy working environment, it is far quicker & easier for a leader to focus on the immediate priorities… But agility isn’t just about speed or the present. It’s also about adapting. Taking the time to look outside the organisation; to make sense of the changes happening in the world and anticipate what might come next…
- The final dimension of our model is Continuous Learning. To thrive in a VUCA world, leaders & managers need to explore; to be open-minded, brave and curious if they are to learn and grow.
It is mindset that will shape leadership development going forward. By developing the leaders’ attitudes and perspective you are giving them an almost ‘inherent’ capability for dealing with the ongoing uncertainties in the world of work.

Preparing Leaders for Uncertainty & Ambiguity
As a leading social housing provider, Stonewater had been going through a period of significant change as it moved towards becoming an even more customer-focussed organisation, enabled by greater use of technology and more agile ways of working. The Pandemic only reinforced and accelerated the need for all leaders to not only survive, but to thrive in an ever-changing, ambiguous business environment.
OE Cam partnered with Stonewater’s People team to design and deliver a Values Based Leadership Programme that would fundamentally shift mindset. Read our case study to learn more about how to incorporate principles of an agile mindset into an existing leadership development programme.
The Six Dimensions of Organisational Agility
An agile organisation embraces change by moving quickly, decisively and effectively to anticipate, initiate and take advantage of change – yet remains robust enough to absorb any set-backs. Thus agility is not just about being fast, it’s also about having the capacity to remain in touch with customer needs.
In this European research report we reveal six dimensions of organisational agility. We share a simple index to measure your own organisation’s agility and outline the key areas to focus on to improve it.
